Introduction to Robotic Pet

Overview

In this program, students who are interested in robotics and coding will design their own robotic pet product. They will communicate their ideal product design through a presentation. Students will nurture their problem-solving skill and growth mindset in a practical immersive learning environment which is essential for their personal development and success. FlipRobot Introduction to Robotic Pet course is offered to students to learn at home through online live delivery with our certified coaches.

Background on Robotic Pets

Robotic pets, also known as companion pets, robotic therapy pets, or autonomous robotic companions, are artificially intelligent machines designed to simulate the actions and behaviours of a household pet. There are a variety of robotic pets on the market today. Most common are dogs and cats, but others such as birds, horses and seals are also available.

An example of a commercially developed robotic pet healthcare solution by California based company, Tombots.

  • This program allows students to design their own robotic pet to train them by instructing to do certain tricks such as barking. 

  • They will use our FlipCode program to hone on their hardware skills in controlling the pet’s movement by using the variable control board with a joystick controller. 

  • Using their conceptual product design, students will engage and further develop their problem-solving skills to effectively avoid and adapt to obstacles. 

  • Students will complete two challenges focusing on their technical and communication skills in an entrepreneurial environment designed to ignite their critical thinking. 

Course Outline
 
  • Construct a conceptual product design of a personalised robotic pet 

  • Assemble and adjust the robot through mechanical engineering of different robotic hardware features  

  • Critically evaluate the current robotic pet technology to address its market needs 

  • Acquire knowledge to program and calibrate motors to control robot mobility 

  • Master their computing skills using FlipCode to train a robotic pet to do a sequence of pre-determined actions on command 

  • Demonstrate analytical thinking to overcome obstacles and challenges faced 

  • Embody the growth mindset principle and practice 

Learning Outcomes
 
  • Year-group suitability: Years 5 to 8

  • Duration: 16 hours course

  • Prerequisite requirements: None

  • Class format: Live online teaching via Zoom. Robotic assembly and coding by students at home. Interaction between teacher and students live online

  • System requirements: 

    • Windows 10 version 1809 and above (64 bits)

    • If using ChromeOS, users will require to install the FlipRobot Chrome extension

    • Supports macOS but not iOS​

    • An Internet connection and an internet browser

    • Zoom video conference application

    • A computer with a camera, mic, speaker (or headphones)

  • We will require a physical delivery address to send the FlipRobot hardware kit.
